I've been saying for a while now that the amp head I would be buying was gonna be the Peavey 5150.

I went to a store to try it out with my guitar, just to see how it sounds and here's how it went.

They didn't have it on display, so they needed to look through the back to find it. While that was going on, I tested out the 5150-212 combo, which was lame.. 212's aren't anything special in my opinion..

Then I tried out the Triple X, which is a pile of ****.

When they finally brought out the 5150 head, it was the 5150 II, which is a marketing tactic. "Hey, you liked the 5150? You'll love this one for $200 more.." kinda thing. The guy said the only difference was the preamp, but it sounded like complete *** compared to the 5150 I played out of a few times. I was very disappointed.

Now I have a few questions: Could the crappy sound be caused by the cab it was plugged into? Maybe it sounds better on a high volume (i could only turn it up to 2-3)? Is there a more significant difference in the 5150 and 5150 II than just preamp?

Or should I buy a totally different amp?

I know its a lot of meaningless crap to yall, but I wanna make sure I'm satisfied after spending $900.

I don't know that much, but my first suggestion would be to go to a different store. I don't know where you were, but the Guitar Center I go to essentially has no limits on the volume, people are always rockin' out and I can hardly hear myself sometimes. If you have a Samash near you, check them out as well, the people there were very friendly and I don't think they cared about volume either.

Yeah there were a bunch of people in there trying to make sales and such.. so I understood the volume deal. The guy even said its meant to be loud, so I might have to make a trip to guitar center with my friend or somethin.

Was this a local place you went to? Before making any expensive purchase I hit the big stores. :tunes:

Schumacher Music.. Yeah it's local.

Ill ask Billy is he can take me up to guitar center next time he goes.. It's a little bit of a drive from here. But he seems to make frequent trips up there with his dad.

don't some GCs have a soundproof room so you can can try it out really loud?

I know mine has a nice soundproof wooden room, but it's for acoustic. Although, I did see some people bringing the electrics into there because it was so loud in the main room. :p

Soundproof rooms kick ***. The guitarist in my band is movin to a new house and he's havin a room over his garage with all soundproof panels and stuff along the walls etc. It should be kickass if he can manage to stay in the band.. he's annoying.

I'm really debating now though.. i might just get the Vai amp.. 100 dollars cheaper..

hmm im a big peavy fan when it comes to guitar amps... i love the XXX but would def. buy a 5150 reall for all those amps to sound good they have to be cranked to at LEAST 4 or 5 .. it could be the cab.. what were you playing out off... some amps like the XXX sound excellent out of the cab made for it.. and not many others.

Yeah, i know this thread was a while ago, but I ended up buying the 5150 head, and playing it through the Legacy Cab is the greatest thing ever. It's actually a really good combination.

Basstallica-- You're right, it sounds best when the pre gain is at about 7, and the post gain is between 3 and 4.
